With the worldwide growth of social media and the internet, more and more people are gaining Certificate and Diploma qualifications through a somewhat non-traditional manner: online. However, many pose the question of whether education gained through online experiences holds the same level of credibility and authority of one acquired traditionally.

Many Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are offered online to eliminate time allocation and geographic limitations their mature aged, working target market faces. Though research shows a staggering 85 per cent of employers consider online degrees are more acceptable today than five years ago, the question still remains.

Critics believe that social interaction and learning from class mates plays a significant role in the learning process and is a central aspect of a well-rounded education. Many institutions combat this minor flaw by actively approaching and remaining in constant contact with students and requiring workplace training as part of assessment.

Arguably, online education and training is a far more productive method of learning. Students collaborate openly with their tutors through a variety of mediums, including email, video conferencing and telephone. Interaction and incorporation of the internet through the virtual class room experience is creating a generation of tech savvy students, critical to 21^st century job seekers.

Online training offers the ability to create a personalised learning plan. Individuals can tailor when, what and for how long they study – ideal for those balancing work and life commitments. On the whole, the method allows students to reap the benefits of lower course fees while having the opportunity to advance their career.

The Australian Government is actively supporting VET through funding. Currently, significant upgrades to satellite services for higher education distance learning students are at the forefront of the budget. The availability of bandwidth will be doubling that available to schools. The upgrades also give rise to a range of new services targeted towards enriching online learning experiences such as two way video conferencing and interactive media.

Overall, whether you choose to study exclusively online or attend a full face to face course is merely a reflection of your personal preferences. Your qualification remains just that, a qualification, and differentiates you greatly from those without.
